The standard method in emacs can be cumbersome in comparison. C-s C-w, appends the rest of the word under the cursor to the search pattern. So using M-b to return to the beginning of word and C-s C-w emacs searches the next occurrence of the word.
Here are some ways of implementing Vim’s
‘#’ in Emacs. The methods are ordered from “most like Vim” to “least like Vim in order to gain other benefits.”
See Evil for installation instructions, then create keybinds. For example:

More in the spirit of Emacs is to have a keybind within Isearch to yank symbol’s at the point. For instance, Isearch has a binding for yanking s-expressions from the buffer. However, an s-expression is a broader definition than the symbol of a common imperative programming language. The yank needs to be only generic enough for identifiers (“symbols”).
‘C-M-w’ is an obvious binding in Isearch for this “symbol yank”.

‘C-s C-M-w C-s’ defined here will search for the entire symbol at the current point. This shorter implementation than the one above of
‘isearch-yank-symbol’ always uses “word” searches and does not alternatively offer “partial” searches. A generally useful feature for Isearch’s extensibility would allow one to search by yanking the entire thing at a point (see ThingAtPoint) and not only something starting at point.

One common issue when using the standard emacs commands is that you have to press M-b and C-w multiple times for symbols which contain multiple “words”, for example foo-bar or fooBar. Using backward-symbol instead of backward-word uses M-b less.

With Icicles, anytime you are in the minibuffer you can use `
M-.’ to yank a text thing at point into the minibuffer. In Isearch,
‘M-e’ puts you in the minibuffer (to edit the search string), and
‘C-s’ then searches with your edited text. So to yank something at point into the Isearch search string you can use `
M-e M-. C-s’.
The behavior of `
M-.’ is customizable. You can control the possible things to yank, and you can decide whether repeated `
M-.’ yanks successive words or yanks different types of thing as alternatives. Use this feature with ThingAtPoint+ to get better thing support.
For example, you can hit `
M-. M-.’ to pick up the most immediatly surrounding list at point. Or `
M-. M-. M-. M-.’ to pick up the list that encloses the list that encloses that list (3rd level up). This is useful when searching for Lisp program parts.
