Warning: This page documents an obsolete package. Gnus comes with cryptography support built in.
Beware: by default Gnus now (March, 2011) uses EasyPG if it is available.
PGG is part of (No/Oort) Gnus, and documented in the manual.
PGG allows Gnus to perform mail signing/encrypting.
PGG is able to use the various cryptographic tools available such as PGP and GnuPG.
Normally you should not need to do anything to setup PGG. It should work out of the box.
You only need to insert this in your ~/.gnus :

many distributions these days break out gpg and gpgv2 as distinct packages. pgg will not be able to locate gpg2 by default. try this in your .gnus:

By default, you have to press “W s” or “W p” to decrypt/verify pgp parts. Mutt does this automatically, and I think gnus should do so, too. Here are my customisations to do that:

You can type C-c RET s p to sign or C-c RET c p to encrypt messages with PGP/MIME (there are also corresponding commands for S/MIME and PGP) but if you want to have maximum security you probably want to have all your messages being encrypted if possible or at least being signed.
Add the following if you only want to sign or encrypt all messages:

This adds an MML command to your message just at the beginning of your message text so you can still switch from signing to encryption or remove the signature by typing one of those C-c RET … commands.
Does anyone have some code to make this happen only for messages that are clearly not to newsgroups or mailing lists, the simplest probably being to just use this when writing a reply, as opposed to a follow-up? – bkhl
If you want gnus to automatically decide it it can encrypt the message or if it only can sign it you can insert the following code into your .gnus file:

This code checks if pgp/gpg can get the PGP-key of the recipient. In this case the message will be encrypted. Otherwise it will only be signed.
The only drawback is that this code is executed while the message is sent so that you can no longer change the signing/encrypting behavior manually.
I would like to use BBDB to tell Gnus if the message has to be signed (via, for example, an always-sign field in the contact entry) or to encrypt it (with an always-encrypt field). I found a similar function with Google, but it was written for mailcrypt (and not pgg). Does anyone has this kind of function ? Thanks ! – nba
Fetching keys depends by default on w3. But the functions it needs is in the url library, now in a separate package. So if fetching doesnt work try to apply this little patch to pgg.el(only moved a closing paren):

Snarfing keys under Gnus using GnusPGG is an easy task. You just have to add an entry into your mailcap (/etc/mailcap or ~/.mailcap) such as :
application/pgp-keys; gpg --import --interactive --verbose;needsterminal
Then Gnus will automatically deal with these entries.
Sometimes, people have a common, company wide GPG key which is not associated with their real email address. E.g. mail to <firstname.lastname@example.org> must be encrypted with <email@example.com>. Trying to send an encrypted mail to <foo.example.com> will fail in this situation as PGG/GPG can not resolve the recipient. Unfortunately, there is no direct support in PGG, but you can workaround it by defining an own scheme:

Then add a ‘gpg-key’ field to people in your BBDB database and PGG will use the value from this field when recipient is within the net address.
I am trying to use this feature for something else. I have a person in my BBDB who has changed their email address, without changing their gpg-key accordingly. I don’t see why I shouldn’t be able to use this code. Unfortunately, when using “C-c RETURN c p C-c C-c” to send a message, I get the following error. Maybe the problem is that I BCC myself, and I use a different key?

funcall: Wrong number of arguments: …, 5. This error says that pgg-gpg-encrypt-region needs five arguments. The last argument is PASSPHRASE. So, I have rewritten the pgg-ensc-gpg-encrypt-region.
On my work desktop, I use one identity (email address) for work stuff, and another when posting to gmane. I have two separate gpg keys for this purpose. To automatically select between them, I use this in my ~/.gnus.el:

In emacs 22, pgg-gpg has a bug which caused (on my newer, faster desktop) output to not be properly handled. The solution is to apply the following patch to pgg-gpg.el:
