Channel tracking is enabled by default. To disable it, use M-x customize-variable RET erc-modules RET. To disable it temporarily, use M-x erc-track-mode.
Channel tracking is for keeping track of activity in channels which are currently not visible on some frame/window. It is defined as global minor mode in erc-track.el. It uses
‘global-mode-string’ as an indicator. global-mode-string is used in nearly every mode-line in different emacs modes, so you will see active channels even in windows which belong to buffers which are not in erc-mode. Be sure to set
‘t’ - else erc-track will stuff itself into the mode-lines-modes instead.
A mode-line with active channels in them might look like this:

Note the abbreviations. This line indicates that there was activity in channel #lisp, #linux and #debian. A nifty algorithm written by AlexSchroeder is responsible for this smart reduction.
You can customize the reduction algorithm by setting the variable
‘erc-track-shorten-function’. The default is
‘erc-track-shorten-names’. Setting it to nil disables channel name reduction.
If you have erc-match.el (ErcHighlighting) loaded and have defined some pals or keywords in your .emacs, the mode-line will indicate pal/keyword activity with the corresponding face (erc-pal-face, erc-keyword-face and so on).
If you are using Emacs 21, you can also use mouse-2 on a channel name to switch that window to the corresponding channel. Mouse-3 will switch to the channel in another Emacs window.
To exclude some types of messages, use the following:

This functionality is now available in ERC. The default key binding is C-c C-SPC (or C-c C-@). Try it out! By default if you press it when there are no more active channels to jump to, it will take you back to what file you were working on before.
Numeric arguments can be given to the keystroke, too, to specify which active channel to jump to. Otherwise jumping will happen from the channel that was active first.
This command will clear out the list of channels.

A quick hack so that query buffers are tracked as if everything contains your current nick, better reflecting the urgency of a private message. Otherwise they just appear in the modeline with the default face and it can be easy to miss them.
This works well with erc-auto-query set to bury. It wont directly interrupt you, but will give you a clear modeline notification. C-c C-space will then take you to your private message.

Is this behaviour good or bad?
Channel tracking should have an associated temperature. This comes about from a combination of two ideas.
I want to handle a situation where a channel is quiescent, and then people start talking. It's possible they've started talking about something interesting so it should show up as activity until I go and take a look at it. However, if I take a look at it and do not mark up the keywords or channel of interest for regular tracking, it will then ignore the channel until a second period of quiscence, when it starts up again
There’s also the issue of, if you go away for a while, it may not be worthwhile to jump back into a conversation that has passed the channel by. Brainstorming on #emacs, it seems one good solution is to associate a temperature with each channel based on channel activity. Each bit of channel activity should be passed to a function which may alter the channel temperature accordingly. (The erc-track display in the modeline should indicate the temperature, as in [#e(75d)] , or ?).
Originally the proposal was to also have a timer function periodically reset each channel’s temperature towards equilibrium. FOr now, this seems like it might not be necessary.
Could this be used to simplify erc-match a bit? This actually is a step towards a scorefile instead of erc’s current kill-file like set up if certain keywords could be assigned a negative temperature, to chill the channel down to -100 deg celsius, and over time it resets itself towards room temperature and that’d be a nice way to consolidate the horrible erc-keywords/erc-pals/erc-fools/erc-half-adozen-other-match-variables. Have one list of (predicate face temperature-delta) elements.
The predicate could be a symbol, to indicate such things as to affect temperature based on time since last activity, perhaps? or a function to be invoked, instead. Hmm.
