X resources take effect before the first Emacs Frame is created, therefore you won’t see the strange “resizing while loading” effect when using X resources. Using EmacsLisp, on the other hand, is portable.

Tool-bar mode shows or hides the tool bar on all frames, which wastes real estate. That’s one reason lots of people just turn it off.
‘tool-bar-here-mode’, which is the same as
‘tool-bar-mode’, except that it affects only the current frame. This saves real estate on frames other than the ones with the tool-bar.
‘tool-bar-mode’are turned off). You can click Buttons to pop up the tool-bar on the current frame just long enough for one command: after you click a tool-bar button, the tool-bar disappears again. The Buttons button is absent whenever the tool-bar is visible, and vice versa.
The idea is to conserve frame real estate but still have quick access to the tool-bar: No reason to have a tool-bar on each frame. No reason to have a tool-bar visible all the time; just pop it up when you need it.

Tip: For a similar pop-up behavior for the MenuBar, you can hide the menu-bar using `
(menu-bar-mode -99)’ and then use
‘C-mouse-3’ to access the menu-bar menus in a popup menu. (This is not available for Emacs 20.)
Hi, this works for me on Emacs 21.4a but not on Emacs 22.1. On the latter, the tool-bar doesn’t appear when I press Buttons. I’m not sure what the problem is. Can you confirm that it works on Emacs 22.1? Thanks! – Christopher.
Yes, I confirm that it works in Emacs 22.1. I just tried it with
emacs -Q on Windows. I checked both
‘tool-bar-here-mode’. Why don’t you describe the problem you’re having, starting with
emacs -Q. Also mention what platform you’re on etc. – DrewAdams
Sorry for not being so informative earlier! This is Emacs 22.1 on GNU/Linux (Slackware 11.0), self-compiled [./configure --without-sound --with-x-toolkit=gtk]. I get the same behavior when using
emacs -q. The Buttons button appears, I press it, it stays pressed (highlighted), but the toolbar doesn’t appear. A very short thin stub is visible just below the left side of the Buttons button, but that’s all, hence the macro seems to try to make the toolbar appear, but for some reason it doesn’t succeed. It’s too bad, because this would be a neat feature (as I can tell on Emacs 21.4a, also on Linux, though on a different machine). Thanks in any case for all of your contributions (dired+.el is wonderful). – Christopher
Thanks for the added info. Unfortunately, I cannot try to reproduce the problem, since I don’t have the same platform. Perhaps someone else can try to debug this, or perhaps you could give it a try yourself. The code is short and pretty simple; it is command
‘show-tool-bar-for-one-command’ that is run when you click Button – try
‘M-x debug-on-entry show-tool-bar-for-one-command’. Debugging might become a bit confusing, however, because the debugger itself could interfere and
‘read-event’ might get thrown off, but you might be able to get some more info about what is going wrong. An alternative is to include
‘message’ calls that print info at various points of the execution.
You should be able to see a bit what is happening – for instance, whether
‘tool-bar-here-mode’ gets run and whether
‘read-event’ ever gets executed.
It sounds as if the tool bar is being displayed partially (well, something seems to get displayed). You might also try changing the code a bit to see what happens. Actually, the first thing to try is
‘tool-bar-here-mode’, which is used by
‘tool-bar-pop-up-mode’ to show the tool bar. If that doesn’t work on its own, then we can look more closely at that (e.g. use
‘debug-on-entry’ on it).

This allows a popup tabbar AND menu bar based on cursor location. It also switches between tab-bar and ruler mode. It is included in EmacsPortable. It requries xpm images close-tab.xpm down.xpm left.xpm left-disabled.xpm right.xpm right-disabled.xpm up.xpm as well as Lisp:tabbar.el. It is located in Lisp:tabbar-ruler.el. First, you stuck this section in the middle of the previous section, before the discussion about Tool-Bar Plus. I’ve moved it out.
Second, what does this have to do with the tool bar? You mention the tab bar and the menu bar, but I see no connection with this page’s topic. Anyway, I see that you also added this same section to TabBarMode and RulerMode. Thx – DrewAdams
