When you return from a nested expression to an outer level of control, this is called a non-local exit.
The simplest non-local exit is the error function. Here is an example from ErcInfo:

The error function returns control to the command-loop in Emacs. erc-cmd-INFO is aborted, and all its bindings are undone. See BindingDefined?.
Another form of non-local exit is the throw/catch duo. Catch defines a point to which you can return control to. Throw returns control to the catch matching the tag it throws.
The following code from NumberedWindows has a catch which will catch the ‘done tag, and deeper within we find a corresponding throw which throws the ‘done tag. The second argument to throw is the value used for the catched throw. Thus, if curr-win is eq to selected-win, the entire catch expression evaluates to pos. If the throw is never reached, the catch expression evaluates to the last expression evaluated, ie. the whatever the dolist evaluated to (in this case, nil).
