It pays to browse the Emacs documentation now and then, just for fun (well, some of us actually think it is fun). Today I decided to read up on dired as I thought that there are surely a lot of power below the surface that I never use. I was not disappointed.
Yes, I know, this should really be placed under Emacs nifty features, but I did not want to SPAM that page… :) – Alex says: Don’t worry, that page should be ripped appart and redistributed over the wiki!!
Also something I did not know: you can flag a file with almost any character, not just
‘*’ which you are probably used to. For example, try this command:
* c OLD-MARKCHAR NEW-MARKCHAR

Replace all marks that use the character OLD-MARKCHAR with marks that use the character NEW-MARKCHAR (`dired-change-marks'). This command is the primary way to create or use marks other than `*' or `D'. The arguments are single characters--do not use <RET> to terminate them. You can use almost any character as a mark character by means of this command, to distinguish various classes of files. If OLD-MARKCHAR is a space (` '), then the command operates on all unmarked files; if NEW-MARKCHAR is a space, then the command unmarks the files it acts on. To illustrate the power of this command, here is how to put `D' flags on all the files that have no marks, while unflagging all those that already have `D' flags: * c D t * c SPC D * c t SPC This assumes that no files were already marked with `t'.

Before library wdired.el (see WDired) came to life a while ago I thought that renaming files in dired was a pain. Operations like make the filenames lowercase or uppercase, prefixing or suffixing files with a string was hard and I usually did it by recording a macro. Which I have to say is quite good too.
But right now I noticed some cool commands that can do all of the above. I’ll rip the text straight from the EmacsManual:
`% u' Rename each of the selected files to an upper-case name (`dired-upcase'). If the old file names are `Foo' and `bar', the new names are `FOO' and `BAR'. `% l' Rename each of the selected files to a lower-case name (`dired-downcase'). If the old file names are `Foo' and `bar', the new names are `foo' and `bar'.
I agree with you that there is lots of stuff in Dired that is is not obvious. I added commands like these to DiredPlus menus to help people notice and learn them.
Another good example is `
‘dired-mark-extension’) – I mentioned that command in response to a question on mailing list
email@example.com, and I got an email back from someone saying that he had used Emacs for decades without being aware of that command. In DiredPlus the command is on the Mark menu, so it’s more noticeable. – DrewAdams
`% R FROM <RET> TO <RET>' `% C FROM <RET> TO <RET>' `% H FROM <RET> TO <RET>' `% S FROM <RET> TO <RET>' These four commands rename, copy, make hard links and make soft links, in each case computing the new name by regular-expression substitution from the name of the old file. The four regular-expression substitution commands effectively perform a search-and-replace on the selected file names in the Dired buffer. They read two arguments: a regular expression FROM, and a substitution pattern TO.
There is also this one, along the same lines: `

dired-x.el. You would think that a command with two key bindings would be known more, but this one even has this amusing 4-year commentary in the source code:

What does it do? It lets you use an arbitrary Lisp sexp as a predicate to determine which files or directories get marked. Very powerful. But, a bit like the Unix
‘find’ command, it is almost a language unto itself: You can use certain predefined symbols in the sexp to stand for certain Dired entities. Here’s the doc string (because you won’t check it out, otherwise):
dired-mark-sexp is an interactive compiled Lisp function in `dired+'. (dired-mark-sexp PREDICATE &optional UNMARK-P) Mark files for which PREDICATE returns non-nil. With a prefix arg, unmark those files instead. PREDICATE is a lisp sexp that can refer to the following variables: `mode' [string] file permission bits, e.g. "-rw-r--r--" `nlink' [integer] number of links to file `size' [integer] file size in bytes `uid' [string] owner `gid' [string] group (If the gid is not displayed by `ls', this will still be set (to the same as uid)) `time' [string] the time that `ls' displays, e.g. "Feb 12 14:17" `name' [string] the name of the file `sym' [string] if file is a symbolic link, the linked-to name, else "" `inode' [integer] the inode of the file (only for `ls -i' output) `blks' [integer] the size of the file for `ls -s' output (ususally in blocks or, with `-k', in Kbytes) Examples: Mark zero-length files: `(equal 0 size)' Mark files last modified on Feb 2: `(string-match "Feb 2" time)' Mark uncompiled Emacs Lisp files (`.el' file without a `.elc' file): First, dired just the source files: `dired *.el'. A small customization to use your [mouse-2] button (middle button) to “find-alternate” on what you click on. It avoids opening a lot of dired buffer when navigating using the mouse. Simply paste this to your .emacs :

To omit unmarked files, just type tk. This toggles the mark and then kills all the marked lines (which were previously the unmarked lines). Silly, but simple.
By default, Dired prints many fields for each file, some of which might be unnecessary clutter. An easy way cut away some of it is to add “-Gg --time-style=+ “ to variable dired-listing-switches. This makes Dired omit owner, group and date fields.
‘C-x C-f’, type a regexp, and use
‘S-TAB’to see all matching files. You can use
[prior]to cycle among them. When you find one you want to act on, use
‘C-o’– or use `
C-!’ to act on all matching files. The “action” here can be anything you like. See command
‘icicle-delete-file’for an example: delete one matching file or all of them.
