Flashcard is a mode to help you learn some facts. A flash card is a small card with two sides. On one side, a question is written, on the other the answer. To learn, you pick up a card, read the question, and try to remember the answer. You do this with all cards. Of course, it soon gets boring, since you will see cards a lot even if you know them, and being bored is bad, since it gives bad feedback for the learning process. Also, you don’t get any positive feedback: The cards are not getting fewer, nothing shows you about the progress of your learning.
This is where Leitner stepped in. With his Lernmaschine as explained in his book So lernt man Lernen, he proposed a simple method: When you get a question right, you move it to a new block, or compartment. When you get a question wrong, it goes right back to the first compartment. (You can find a summary of the complete algorithm in the docstring of
This results in questions you get right not being asked too soon again, while difficult cards get asked over and over again. This prevents you from getting bored with stuff you already know. And since you promote such questions to a new compartment, you actually have a visual feedback on how well your learning progresses - the positive feedback we need to make learning effective.
There are other techniques that improve on this. The Supermemo method for example tries to reduce the amount of reoccurances of questions to the minimal amount needed to learn them. Their page has a lot of interesting information that can be used without Supermemo, too, so be sure to read it.
This package tries to allow for different styles of questioning, according to the preference of the user. On this page, people can publish new methods - see below for some of them.
A general learning tool. Flashcard helps you remember basic facts. It won’t help you understand a text, or even the Greater Context of the facts. For what it was made - facts - it works great, but for everything else, this is definitively not the right mode to look at.
With learning, first and foremost, don’t get angry if you don’t remember something. That’s normal. Humans forget constantly if they don’t need something. Learning is a fight against forgetting. If you don’t remember an answer, shrug and just go along - flashcard.el will see to it that you will get asked the question soon again, and then you will probably remember it. If not, soon after that.
Then, consider having a single (or only a few) deck files in which you import all your questions. This is not bad from a learning point of view since it’s often more problematic to learn similar types of questions only. Also, this will allow you to just open that single file and go through it any time you feel like it, getting you to learn everything you want to learn with minimal effort.
And a final note: Have fun. Without fun, you won’t learn much, and what’s most important: You don’t have fun! :-)

A method is the algorithm used by flashcard to decide which cards it uses. The default method -
‘flashcard-method-leitner’ - is a faithful implementation of Leitners’ original algorithm.
Flashcard uses a defined interface of function variables to call the functionality of the backend. Every method should provide an interactive function named
‘flashcard-method-NAME’ that sets the required variables. See the documentation of each of those.

I have implemened the SM5 algorithm as a flashcard method and would appreciate feedback. I have been using it successfully for about a month now and prefer the accuracy and speed of learning to the Leitner method. SM6 nor SM11 do not seem particularly more effecient. I’d be interested to see a method that has a queue of words you haven’t yet started on, and starts on the next one on the list when you’re doing well enough on all your current words. This is with the intention of throwing in a substantial vocabulary list (perhaps in order of usefulness) and having the program take me through it gradually, automatically. Has anyone done something like this? If not, I’ll probably get round to it sometime, but I don’t want to duplicate work.
I switched a while ago from the default Leitner method to SM5, and found it’s a big improvement. It also seems to meet my need for chucking in big chunks of vocabulary from a file and have it drip-feed them to me.
An import function is trivial. It’s just an interactive function that takes a file as an argument from the user, and adds all cards it can find in that file to the current deck. See

Positive feedback is important (really!). Find ways to motivate you, and tell flashcard how to do that. As an example
