Currently I use mcomplete.el, but Icicles is more functionable? – Anonymous
minibuffer completion from only history with mcomplete
This was moved here from IciclesDiscussion:
mcomplete.elcommentary says that it is “
icomplete.el(via icomplete+.el). In any case,
icomplete.elis not about completion, and Icicles is mostly about completion. See Icicles - Icompletion.
iswitchb.eldoes, though you can have iswitchb-like behavior with Icicles. And you can use
iswitchb.eland Icicles together.
mcomplete.elcommentary also says that mcomplete supports substring matching. Substring matching is a proper subset of the regexp matching that Icicles provides. Also, you can toggle substring vs regexp matching at any time, using `
C-`’ in the minibuffer.
MComplete is basically “ido-*” style completion for all minibuffer input. It’s pretty straightforward. I’ve used it with great results for the past few years. And now I’m probably going to switch to icicles. MComplete seeks to do all completions right in the minibuffer; while icicles uses a separate
"Completions" buffer. Functionally icicles is MComplete’s superset; but MComplete is lighter weight and fulfills its purpose very well. It depends on what you need, I guess. Also for MCompleter users looking at icicles, I find icomplete+.el very useful. Keep in mind though, the minubuffer completions you see [with Icomplete] are not selectible. – LeWang
I find mcomplete conflicts with my ido mode, and add following to fix it:
(mapcar #'(lambda (f) (put f 'mcomplete-mode '(:mode off))) '(ido-recentf-open ido-switch-buffer ido-delete-backward-updir ido-exit-minibuffer))
