I use Emacs. After some hand and arm pain, I started to use Vim full-time from Nov-2005 to Mar-2006, but the ultimate result of that experiment has been to teach me how to use Emacs more effectively by using ESC as Meta. I highly recommend that you try mapping Esc onto the CapsLock key sometime. (I’ll admit it: I still use vi for quick edits of config files.)

For recent versions of OpenBSD?, people who wish to use (display-battery) can paste the following bit of elisp into your .emacs file (hacked from what JoelHolveck uses in his .emacs):

 (defun battery-openbsd-proc-apm ()
   (let* ((apm-output (shell-command-to-string "apm"))
 	 (ac-line-status (and (string-match
 			       "^A/C adapter state: \\(.*\\)$" apm-output)
 			      (match-string 1 apm-output)))
 	 (battery-status-verbose (and (string-match
 				       "^Battery state: \\(.*\\)$" apm-output)
 				      (match-string 1 apm-output)))
 	 (battery-life-percentage (and (string-match
 					"^Battery remaining: \\(.*\\) percent$"
 					apm-output)
 				       (match-string 1 apm-output)))
 	 (battery-life-time (and (string-match
 				  "^Battery life estimate: \\(.*\\) minutes$"
 				  apm-output)
 				 (match-string 1 apm-output)))
 	 (battery-status-terse (cond
 				((string-equal ac-line-status
 					       "connected") "+")
 				((string-equal battery-status-verbose
 					       "high") "")
 				((string-equal battery-status-verbose
 					       "low") "-")
 				((string-equal battery-status-verbose
 					       "critical") "!")
 				(t "?")))
 	 (retval ()))
     (when ac-line-status
(setq retval (cons (cons ?L ac-line-status) retval)))
     (when battery-status-verbose
(setq retval (cons (cons ?B battery-status-verbose) retval)))
     (when battery-life-time
(setq retval (cons (cons ?t battery-life-time) retval)))
     (when battery-life-percentage
(setq retval (cons (cons ?p battery-life-percentage) retval)))
     (when battery-status-terse
(setq retval (cons (cons ?b battery-status-terse) retval)))
     retval))
 (setq battery-status-function 'battery-openbsd-proc-apm
       battery-echo-area-format "Power %L, battery %B (%p%% charged, remaining time %t)"
       battery-mode-line-format " [%b%p%%] ")
 (display-battery)

Please suggest corrections or improvements. It worked on my IBM Thinkpad X40 with OpenBSD? 3.5 and GNU Emacs 21.3. I no longer have that machine.

There was a crappy version of battery-macosx-proc-ioreg here, but someone else came up with a better one, so that is here instead.

The anonymous person says, “Here’s a version in elisp that also copes with the fact that the “Flags” is weird unless it’s on battery.”

 (defun battery-macosx-proc-ioreg ()
   (save-window-excursion
     (with-temp-buffer
       (shell-command "ioreg -p IODeviceTree -n battery -w 0" (current-buffer))
       (goto-char (point-min))
       (let ((status "?")
            (pct "?")
            (terse ""))
        (when (re-search-forward
               "\"IOBatteryInfo\" = ({\"Capacity\"=\\([0-9]+\\),\"Amperage\"=\\([0-9]+\\),\"Current\"=\\([0-9]+\\),\"Voltage\"=\\([0-9]+\\),\"Flags\"=\\([0-9]+\\)}" nil t)
          (let* ((capacity (car (read-from-string (match-string 1))))
                 (amps (car (read-from-string (match-string 2))))
                 (current (car (read-from-string (match-string 3))))
                 (volts (car (read-from-string (match-string 4))))
                 (flags (car (read-from-string (match-string 5)))))
            (if (= flags 4)
                (setq status "battery" terse "-")
                (setq status "A/C"
                      terse (if (> current (* 0.99 capacity)) "" "+")))
            (setq pct (format "%.1f" (/ (* 100.0 current) capacity)))))
        `((?p . ,pct) (?L . ,status) (?b . ,terse))))))

I also no longer have an Apple notebook, so I can’t test this code anymore.
