‘compile-command’ holds the default value for the `M-x compile’ command. The default value is “make -k” which is good enough for most projects, because you’ll either have a Makefile, or you can rely on the default rules within make. And if you change the default, Emacs will remember that.
However, some people might still want to experiment with it. Take a look at the compile-command documentation (use `C-h v compile-command’). Or look at this here:

This will run Make if there is a Makefile in the same directory as the source-file, or it will create a command for compiling a single file and name the executable the same name as the file with the extension stripped.
Put the code in your ~/.emacs file. If you don’t use the require statement, the first invokation of M-x compile will load the compile package and possibly overwrite your setting of compile-command. Replace c-mode-hook with the appropriate hook of your language (c++-mode-hook, for example). make-local-variable creates a BufferLocalVariable. This is important, because the default value will vary for every buffer.
For a very nicely-done package, check out SmartCompile; it will figure out how it should compile your file based on filename.
compile is not just limited to compiling source-code. For example, you can put the following LocalVariables at the bottom of a file called .crontab in your home directory:

You can add you own hooks about what has to be done after the compilation.
The variable compilation-finish-functions is a list of functions to be executed after the build (by default it’s empty). The functions need to have 2 parameters, the first one is the compilation buffer and the second one is the string result.
You can use tooptip-show or any other way to notify the compilation results.

Alternatively since M-x compile just runs a shell command, you could append commands depending on the success or failure. For example you could play a notification like this:

Of course I’m assuming you have bplay installed and that your shell supports the “||” and “&&” conditionals.
It would be nicer still if compile were written to allow for no buffer at all. God forbid commands should leave window configurations alone.

Note that after you have hit the enter once for your compile command, you can run the same command again (without confirming the command) with M-x recompile.
I use this command to compile, which will recompile in the exact same way as last time, unless given a prefix argument. This is really handy for big projects where I need to edit a lot of files in different directories.

How is that different from M-x recompile?
Answer: M-x recompile just executes the last compile command in the directory of the current buffer which can be different from the directory of the compile buffer. So you would have to manually switch to the compile buffer and do compile there. This is what the above command does.
In some projects, systems do not have a Makefile in each directory. As an example, you may be working on files in src/h/, and you’d like to execute
make -f ../../Makefile. To do this, you’ll need to extract the closest makefile in the parent directory and above:

It seems to be necessary, that the directory name has a terminating slash if used as an default-directory in the way shown in the function in-directory later on. Emacs 23.3.1 ends up a directory too high, if the default-directory does not contain a trailing slash. So try this:

This isn’t a compile-specific tweak, but I tend to use it for that and grep mostly. Often I’ll want to run M-x compile or M-x grep, but I will want the default-directory to be something other than the current buffer’s. I wrote the following command and bound it to M-X (ie, shift-M-X):

When working on a windows system a want to use the standard
‘make’ for compilation in some directories, but in other cases I want to use
‘nmake’ for VC project files (or to be more precise for Makefiles generated from VisualStudio projects).
‘nmake’ from Visual Studio requires a lot of typing until you have the complete command with its lengthly specification of the target. So my decision was to use a command for nmake, when ever I find a file with the extension `.mak’ in the working directory. If I really decide to run the usual make instead it is only Ctrl-a, Ctrl-k and 7 more keys and I’m ready to run.
