UsingMultipleShells

This is the technique i’ve used to allow multiple shells making changes to ShellMode. For a different approach see ShellCurrentDirectory. With this i can have a shell for each directory i work in and have a history for all the commands related to work done in that directory.

The changes required are as such:

In comint.el:

  	      (list "TERM=emacs"
  		    (format "TERMCAP=emacs:co#%d:tc=unknown:" (frame-width))))
(if (getenv "EMACS") nil (list "EMACS=t"))
  + (if (string-equal (buffer-name) "*tex-shell*") (list "TEXSHELL=t"))
  	    process-environment))
  	  (default-directory
  	    (if (file-accessible-directory-p default-directory)

(i really don’t want save any commands related to tex processing)

in shell.el:

  ***************
  *** 411,420 ****
      (let ((shell (file-name-nondirectory (car
  		   (process-command (get-buffer-process (current-buffer)))))))
  	(setq comint-input-ring-file-name
  ! (or (getenv "HISTFILE")
  ! (cond ((string-equal shell "bash") "~/.bash_history")
  ! ((string-equal shell "ksh") "~/.sh_history")
  ! (t "~/.history"))))
  	(if (or (equal comint-input-ring-file-name "")
  	      (equal (file-truename comint-input-ring-file-name)
  		     (file-truename "/dev/null")))
  --- 400,422 ----
      (let ((shell (file-name-nondirectory (car
  		   (process-command (get-buffer-process (current-buffer)))))))
  	(setq comint-input-ring-file-name
! ;; allow for specialized history based on the directory in
! ;; which the shell process was started
  ! (cond ((file-exists-p
  ! (expand-file-name
  ! (concat default-directory ".bash_history_here")))
  ! (expand-file-name
  ! (concat default-directory ".bash_history_here")))
  ! ((and (= (user-uid) 0)
  ! (file-exists-p
  ! (expand-file-name
  ! (concat default-directory ".bash_history_here-root")))
  ! (expand-file-name
  ! (concat default-directory ".bash_history_here-root"))))
  ! (t (or (getenv "HISTFILE")
  ! (cond ((string-equal shell "bash") "~/.bash_history")
  ! ((string-equal shell "ksh") "~/.sh_history")
  ! (t "~/.history"))))))
  	(if (or (equal comint-input-ring-file-name "")
  	      (equal (file-truename comint-input-ring-file-name)
  		     (file-truename "/dev/null")))

in my .emacs: (taken directly from shell.el)

  (defun my-shell ()
"Run an inferior shell in the current directory.
set name to that of this directory.
If buffer exists but shell process is not running, make new shell.
\(Type \\[describe-mode] in the shell buffer for a list of commands.)"
    (interactive)
    (require 'shell)
    (let (shell-buffer
  	  comint-name
(pop-up-windows t)) ; so that it is in another window

;; standardize the shell name (fix problems from locate)

      (if (and (>= (length default-directory) 2)
  	       (string= (substring default-directory 0 2) "//"))
  	  (setq default-directory (substring default-directory 1)))

(if (> (length default-directory) (length (getenv "HOME")))
(if (string= (substring default-directory 0 (length (getenv "HOME")))
  		       (getenv "HOME"))
  	      (setq default-directory
  		    (concat "~"
  			    (substring default-directory
  				       (length (getenv "HOME")))))))

;; put the name shell first for easier lookup

      (setq shell-buffer (format "*shell-%s*" default-directory)
  	    comint-name (format "shell-%s" default-directory))

      (if (not (comint-check-proc shell-buffer))
  	  (let* ((prog (or explicit-shell-file-name
  			   (getenv "ESHELL")
  			   (getenv "SHELL")
  			   "/bin/sh"))
  		 (name (file-name-nondirectory prog))
  		 (startfile (concat "~/.emacs_" name))
(xargs-name (intern-soft (concat "explicit-" name "-args"))))
  	    (save-excursion
  	      (set-buffer (apply 'make-comint comint-name prog
  				 (if (file-exists-p startfile) startfile)
  				 (if (and xargs-name (boundp xargs-name))
  				     (symbol-value xargs-name)
  				   '("-i"))))
  	      (setq shell-buffer (current-buffer))
  	      (shell-mode))))

      (pop-to-buffer shell-buffer)))

and finally to .bashrc:

  # {{{ environment variables (for emacs shell-mode)

  #
  HISTCONTROL=ignoredups
  #export MANPATH=/fmc/doc:/usr/man:/usr/local/man
  export HOST=$(hostname)
  # export DIRSTACK=~/.directory_stack-$HOSTNAME
  if [ "$TEXSHELL" = t ] ; then
      echo no history file
      export HISTFILE=/dev/null
  else
      if [ "$EMACS" = t ] ; then
  	  # this is for interaction with emacs
  	  echo using local history file
  	  export HISTFILE=$(pwd)/.bash_history_here

  	  # don't such an extensive prompt as we know what directory we
  	  # are in and what machine we are on

  	  export PS1='[\t] \$ '
      else
  	  export HISTFILE=~/.bash_history-$HOSTNAME
      fi
  fi

  # }}}
